Linux Version 2.2, by Bill Machrone, May 20, 1999
Make no mistake: Version 2.2 of Linux is a significant new update. Its a
feature-rich version of Unix that runs on platforms ranging from 386s to SPARCstations,
gives you superb Internet tools, including Apache Web server, and runs an increasing
collection of applications and utilities, many available for free. Several computer
makers, including Dell and IBM, are even offering desktop systems with Linux preinstalled,
either alone or as a dual boot with Windows 98 or NT. And Linux keeps getting noticed. Not
only is it gaining support from third-party developers (including Corel and IBM), it also
now approaches and in some cases even surpasses Windows NT 4.0 in areas such as
scalability and support for 64-bit processing and multiprocessing. If you havent
been paying attention to Linux so far, now would be a good time.
